Preschool readiness checklist for your toddler

For many children, preschool is the first time away from family for a full day and the first time in a big group of kids their age. That's exciting, and the first few weeks can feel hard for kids and parents alike. At A+ Academy we help children build the skills that make school easier: calming down and waiting a turn, understanding and using words, making friends, and solving small problems like how to stack blocks into a tower. They don't need to arrive knowing it all. A little practice at home goes a long way, and we'll take it from there together. Here's a simple checklist to get started.

Build self-care habits

Slowly hand over small jobs like getting dressed, using the potty, eating on their own and getting ready to leave the house.

Make new friends

Set up playdates or park visits with kids around the same age so sharing and taking turns feel familiar.

Read together every day

Read aloud and let your child follow along. It builds the patience to sit and listen during our circle-time stories.

Talk about preschool early

Around age 3, start chatting about what school is like: the activities, the teachers, and what kind, polite behavior looks like.

Partner with teachers

Share what you notice at home. Our teachers are happy to talk through any worries so we can support your child together.

Use pictures for routines

A picture calendar or schedule helps little ones know what comes next, at home and in the classroom.

Go on outings

Trips to the library, zoo or post office teach kids how to behave in busy places with lots going on.

Play with little hands

Crayons, play dough, puzzles and blocks build the hand muscles your child will use for crafts and activities in class.
