Winter wear activities for preschool

Cold weather is a great chance to teach kids about seasonal clothes. Learning what to wear, and why, is an early step in self-care. These hands-on games are easy to try at home and make bundling up fun.
Dress the winter doll
Give your child a paper doll and cutouts of hats, scarves and mittens. Let them dress the doll for a snowy day. Builds fine motor skills and creativity.
Winter clothing match
Make picture cards of jackets, boots and hats plus weather scenes. Ask your child to match the clothes to the weather. Builds vocabulary and visual skills.
Design a hoodie
Cut out paper hoodie shapes and break out the markers and stickers. While they decorate, talk about how a hood keeps ears warm. Builds creativity and design thinking.
Bundle-up relay race
Fill a basket with hats, scarves and mittens. Kids race in teams to put them on. Builds teamwork and big-muscle movement, and gets the giggles going.
Summer or winter?
Mix shorts and sandals with coats and boots. Ask your child to sort them into summer and winter piles. Builds sorting and thinking skills.
Story time with seasonal clothes
Read a winter story like "Froggy Gets Dressed" by Jonathan London. Talk about what the characters wear and why. Builds listening and understanding.
Winter fashion show
Let kids put on their favorite jacket, boots and hat, then strut down a pretend runway and tell everyone about their outfit. Builds confidence and self-expression.
